TECHNOLOGY Sunfilm’s photovoltaic modules are based on a tandem junction thin film silicon cell structure. The upper cell, consisting of an ultrathin layer of amorphous silicon is active in converting the shorter wavelengths of the visible solar spectrum. The thicker bottom cell, based on microcrystalline silicon is most effective at the longer wavelengths of the visible spectrum plus parts of the infrared range. This combination of layers uses a larger part of the solar spectrum and thereby results in a more efficient conversion of solar energy to electrical energy. When compared to single layer thin film amorphous silicon, the tandem junction technology delivers module efficiencies that are typically 30 % higher. It is the highest performing thin film module that can currently be produced in a large format. High energy yield - or more energy output (kWh) per installed power (kWp): For all photovoltaic technologies, the efficiency of a module is reduced when the module operates at a higher temperature (a negative “temperature coefficient”). This is particular true for wafer-based photovoltaic modules (mono- or polycrystalline). However, the temperature coefficient of tandem junction thin film silicon is only about 60 % of that of wafer based modules. As a result, Sunfilm’s modules maintain their efficiency better, even in hot climates. The performance rating of solar modules is always based on an ideal solar spectrum, simulating an unclouded sky, illuminating the module directly overhead. However, during the early morning hours, late afternoons or with clouded skies the solar radiation spectrum is different from this “ideal” condition. Through its broad spectral absorption band, the tandem junction module also converts this sub-optimum light more efficiently than a wafer based module. It starts working earlier and keeps going longer. Therefore, under these real world conditions, tandem junction thin film silicon modules typically produce more energy (kWh) per kWp installed than wafer based modules. The absorption of the full visible spectrum in tandem junction modules also gives Sunfilm products their characteristic, uniform black appearance and makes them well suited for applications where aesthetics are of importance. |
